the smoothie that rocks my world...and a GIVE-AWAY!

Good morning friends.  We finally made it to Friday!  I'm going to share one of my favorite recipes with you this morning.  I kind of made it up myself or tweaked it from various sources.  It's my mango smoothie.  It's also a really great snack for your kiddos when they get home from school.  It's the perfect blend of healthy and yummy:)

When I'm on the wagon and doing really good, it's usually because I started out the day drinking this!  Not having bread in the morning somehow wires me to watch carbs the rest of the day.  If I eat toast, or waffles or whatever then that's all I crave.  Weird.  For instance ya'll know I'm pmsing.  Yesterday I had 2 pieces of toast for breakfast, a package of Ritz crackers for lunch...with swiss cheese and then before dinner I ate 3 scones!  Oh yeah and before bed I made more toast!  What in the WORLD??  Anyway that no bread thing isn't working for me as of late.

When I make my smoothie I load up the blender with tons of spinach...or a mixture of kale and spinach.  We are talking two giant handfuls.  I add approximately 1 cup of water, or you could add milk or a little orange juice if you wanted.  Then add one scoop of protein whey powder...or  half a scoop if you are watching calories.  For me this step is super important because the protein keeps me from getting hungry in an hour.

I finish it off with one teaspoon of local honey, a few chunks of mango (but you can use any fruit) and two heaping spoonfuls of Greek yogurt.  Again the Greek yogurt adds protein!  Mix until smooth and creamy.  SO GOOD!  I also make variations of this with peanut butter, and bananas or raspberries.  You really can't go wrong.  If you know of a great green drink make sure to share your recipe with us.

I'm attempting to grow the Feed my Family Friday posts.  I think alot of you lurk on Fridays;)  Recipe posts tend to be a little boring in my book, but it's keeping me accountable with my goals for the year of feeding my sweet family.  AND according to my linky page views the links are receiving between 6,000-7,500 hits.  Who knew?  That's so that's amazing!  So link up friends:)

Okay so this week I'm offering a smaller version of my beautiful soul to one of my linked up readers.  Don't worry if you don't have a blog, you can still be thrown in the pot if you leave a recipe in the comment section.  So grab my button pretty please and link to your recipe post...not to your blog url.  I'll leave the linky thing open until next Friday and announce the winner then.  Can't wait to see what you've been feeding your families.

feed my family friday

Have a blessed weekend.

  2. This recipe looks so yummy! I am going to try it out this weekend. Can I ask what brand of protein powder you use and can we get it in Richmond? In the past, I have ordered Jay Robb brand on-line but would prefer not to have to pay shipping. Have a great weekend!

  3. Smoothies are the shape of my heart. Really, really. I usually have one for lunch. I've never had mango before. Yum! I add flax and oatmeal to mine - so good! I must try protein powder at some point. You know, I meant to link up! Then I got sidetracked with Instagram. Hey, I'll trade you your iPad for my phone?! ; )

  6. I love a smoothie with banana, peanut butter, and vanilla greek yogurt! I feel guilty with the p.b. so I have been experimenting. I have tried a Brand Better than P.B. that has less calories. I have also heard of PB2 that is a powdered p.b. that has lowere calories and fat..but still has taste. I want to check it out soon. Love your blog! It makes me happy!

  8. Smoothies are so wonderful! I need to make one for us this morning. My blender is on the fritz, though, so every smoothie I make is an adventure. :P
Here is a link to a recipe that I made recently, for taco cornbread casserole. It's super easy, and SO yummy! Plus, you can really play around with how you want it to taste. (Love this gal's blog, too. She's got lots of great healthy recipe ideas!)

  9. I love smoothies. I usually add Greek Yogurt but have never tried protein powder before. Maybe that's the secret. I always seem to feel hungry soon after having a smoothie. I thought it was that psychological theory of drinking instead of chewing therefore it's not satisfying. I'll have to try protein powder.

  10. I'm a total lurker and rarely leave comments but I LOVE your beautiful soul picture!!
I found this recipe in Gourmet mag eons ago and it is a family favorite in the summer:

    Grilled Lemon Chicken
    TB fresh lemon zest
    1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
    1/2 cup olive oil
    1 large egg
    TB salt
tsp poultry seasoning (or 1/2 tsp each rosemary and thyme)
    1/4 teaspoon white pepper
    2 cloves garlic
I usually mix this up with my hand blender. Pour the marinade over your choice of chicken cut; breasts, skinned bone in thighs, whatever you like best but I totally think it's best when you take the skin off because the flavors soak into the meat. Let the chicken soak (covered in the fridge) for at least 4-6 hours but overnight REALLY makes it good. Grill chicken and serve with pasta salad or roasted potatoes or caesar salad.

    I hope you like it!!
    :)

  12. i was just at the store and saw kale for sale for over $2 a bunch. we grow kale in the garden and it grows like wildfire, so in the dead of winter (when the kale won't grow) i can't bring myself to buy any! in the summer we drink a kale juicer every single day. good for you--i'm trying to get back on the exercising band wagon, but i'm doing terrible. are you still doing well?

BUT - I will TRUST that it tastes delish. :) I am just warming up to kale - and I think its time to put on my big girl panties and throw it in my protein shakes too. :)

Happy Friday, friend - I'm trying to link up my recipe (FOR PANCAKES...how's that for a carb intake - had it for dinner during my PMS'ing....) - but my link isn't working well right now. blerg.

  21. Mmmm! That really sounds good, Becky! I've been drinking Shellagh's protein shakes in the morning (froz strawberries, Muscle Milk Protein powder, blueberries, a touch of vanilla, 2 green tea pills, and a 1/8 tsp of Stevia) and just love it. You're right eating carbs in the morning. They affect me the same way. Once in my mouth....the rest of the day in my mouth! lol! I'm going to have to try adding spinach and yogurt to my morning smoothie! Thanks for the tip!

    Hugs to you!
