Several of you have asked me about our clean eating diet...so here goes. Back in January I was just sitting at my computer probably blogging, and Honey came in and told me about a website called bodybuilders.com. After perusing through the before and after pics I was in. WE were in. We've always loved exercise, but the eating part for us has been really hard to master.
This pic is how I looked that day. Not bad, but definitely some pudge. I wanted to get that lean look. Didn't know if it was possible, but we were ready to try. So for the next several weeks we started a very clean diet of basically egg whites, oatmeal, chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, asparagus and cottage cheese. Needless to say that strict diet got old really quickly. But during that process Honey and I both started shedding the puffy look. The bloat was finally melting.
I wrote down everything that went in my mouth. The goals was to eat 5 or 6 times a day. A lean protein with a good carb at every meal. No processed foods. No sugar. The cravings were out of control at first. It was awful. We were really used to eating whatever we wanted. We would have "dirty" talk about food. It was hilarious. I have to say having Honey do this with me is the ONLY way it has been successful...because I'm a weakling. I love food, especially SUGAR!

{These were at 4 weeks and 7 pounds later}Our goal was to change our eating habits...to be healthy and in the process feel good about our bodies. I can't believe it's been 6 months now. I've lost about 6 more pounds since those pics. Honey has lost almost 20 pounds too. What used to seem impossible is now obtainable. Nothing is sweeter than that:)

(Dad's Great Green Chili)
The days of plain sweet potatoes and a baked chicken breast are gone. We couldn't continue with that day in and day out. So I had to get creative. I really don't like cooking, but unfortunately you have to cook to eat clean. We also have our staples like Subway and have scoured every restaurant's menu to tweak it to fit into our new lifestyle. No one makes it easy. That's for sure.
I found a few cookbooks to be lifesavers. Bill Phillips, Eating for Life is a really good one. The Green chili recipe is yummy. There is also Tosca Reno's various Eat Clean cookbooks. Very inspirational.

Frittatas are easy too. Just saute some of your favorite veggies (I use asparagus, mushrooms, and an onion potato mix) add egg whites and cook in the skillet lifting sides to seep egg mixture...cooking for 5-7 minutes. Once almost set add some low fat cheese and broil for 4-5 minutes until brown.

Then our staple...grilled chicken/strawberry salad. We add some red onion, low fat feta cheese and a few croutons. We found a really good lite balsamic vinaigrette and voila...dinner:)

Well one of our kiddos...a.k.a. crumb snatchers just happened to ask him for a bite and...

WATCH OUT!!!
Oh my gosh this picture cracks me up!
That's what eating no sugar for months on end will do to you:)
All this to say that after doing good for months at a time...the two trips and my folks coming kind of derailed me a little. I've had a hard time getting back to writing stuff down. I'm treating myself a little too often and the cravings are back. I haven't really gained weight, but I feel soft. So I wrote this to remind myself of all our hard work and to remember how good it felt to eat clean.
As my favorite fitness guru Jillian Michaels would say:

Oh my word, I love you guys. That photo of your man is absolutely priceless. You should get it blown up poster sized for father's day!!! You look awesome by the way. I feel like I am inching toward doing this clean eating thing... with all of Ava's stomach issues, I just feel tired of sifting through foods. I'm ready to make it BORING!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteGreat job girlie... You look fantastic! I love the new blog header, you are so talented :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Lookin' good! Great inspiration! Why does it have to be so dang hard though :] I will have to check out that clean eating diet! I need to do something! Not so happy with the way I've been eating or the way I look at all!
ReplyDeleteI tend to grab for those sweets when I worry or am stressed!
Love your new banner by the way it's super cute!
Elizabeth
The picture of your of you honey with his cheerios is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI wanna be you and eat clean, I try and last a week and then...cave again, you are my new hero! LOL
You look awesome, girl! Way to go for pursuing healthier eating. Jillian has my Mom's motto, don't try - do! I grew up hearing that. ;)
ReplyDeleteBecky! You look amazing-er than ever! Way to go, you both did great. I love the Jillian quote; that is good. Have you seen her new show? I am thinking about watching it. Is "thinking about" something also failure? Kinda sounds like it.
ReplyDeleteSo, tomorrow I reveal my big "secret". :)
Hope you're having a blessed day,
Erin
Hey Becky!
ReplyDeleteYou are my hero!!! :-)) I am always cooking "clean" but somehow, it comes out dirty!:D
I think it makes such a difference when you create meals with fresh foods. When Annabelle was a baby, I made all of her baby food from fresh, organic fruits and veggies. It was so pretty and vibrant! When Chloe came along, we were living out of boxes and she was eating from a jar. To this day, Annabelle reaches for fruits and veggies first. Chloe goes for the sweet/salty stuff. Hopefully, our little boy will be eating the fresh stuff, too!
Congrats to you for striving to eat healthier!!! You look amazing!!!!!:))))
Hugs to you!
Melanie
Wow! You clearly posted this for me this evening! I have four kiddos and with number four, who's 18 months old, I still haven't really lost my baby weight. And once I stopped nursing, well... So my husband and I started this intensive training program to get into shape about six weeks ago. I can totally tell that I have more energy and everything is tighter and more firm but I still have that bloated layer, that pudge. Clothes that fit me two kids ago are still just one size too small, well, maybe two. The one thing we haven't done, that I really haven't done, is worked on my diet. I have a horrible sweet tooth and LOVE to cook, and eat while I cook. I've been resisting until this point but after seeing your pictures, after FOUR WEEKS!! I realize that I am clearly missing that component. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I'm half way through the program so maybe I'll kick it up a notch and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI needed this today! I've gotten off track too and it's time to start back up again. I'm not going to try I'm going to DO. Thanks Becky. Love your blog. Wish you would blog more often!
ReplyDeleteHi Becky,
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm a mess. I've been trying to figure out a good sugar detox and I definitely need to eat healthier. How long did it take before your sugar cravings weren't so intense?
I love the new blog header!
Why is this such a trial to all of us? It seems like the greatest challenge we face...I can be such a good woman but do I ever have a sweet tooth! LOL I could not write everything down but I seem to be able to balance each day and hold back when I need to..but it is a hard thing! Come say hi :D
ReplyDeleteYou're so cool, Becky!
ReplyDelete: )
Julie M., who loves powdered donuts...but is just saying, "NO!"
You look absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeleteBut you've already figured out that it's more about feeling good and being healthy. Still, it's pretty darn awesome to end up with abs like you've got! :-)
Love your new header!
Anne
DANG girl, you rock!! Looking great! I will do that someday too ;)
ReplyDeleteYou guys looked pretty great to begin with! My director recently threw out all processed foods and she's already lost weight. I hate to cook, hate. to. cook. But, we have been doing much better...My director also allows a few cheats here and there and found that the flat bread at Subway-actually has more calories and fat than the reg. kind...dang! Good luck and I admire your determination!
ReplyDeleteYou are looking good!
ReplyDeleteYou are one HOT Mama Becky!! You know, that I know how hard it is to stay on track. I too have become lax in writing things down treating myself a little too often. Exercise and healthy eating are the key but my goodness ~ how come all the sinful foods are sooooo good?? Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Becky!
ReplyDeleteYour weight loss/ healthy eating is such an inspiration. This is something that is on my mind..but at the back of my mind.
I love the attitude that you CAN do it no matter what. It's something I NEED to do!

So stinkin' proud of YOU! (and your Honey, of course.) What an encouragement! You look fantastic! Keep it up, I bet you feel great!
ReplyDeleteI love your new header, too - so you!! ;)
ReplyDelete((thanks for your continued inspiration))
Well, you looked great before- just want to say that- and you look great now, and I am sure that your insides feel Really great!
ReplyDeleteYou are very Inspirational!
I have been thinking about eating Cleaner. Where do Lays chips fall in this diet?
Awesome!! You look great. I love Tosca's books-we have them all. I, too, don't like to cook but as you mentioned that is the thing with clean eating. It is all worth the effort though isn't it?
ReplyDeleteRaquel
That is so awesome, Becky! My hubs and I are trying to do the same thing right now. It is so hard when you are busy, but the name of the game is planning, planning and more planning. I just cannot eat well on the fly. It seems I just grab what is in front of me. But the frittata idea is fabulous! How did I not think of that?? Thanks for sharing...you have inspired me to get back on track! ;o)
ReplyDelete~mary~
First...congrats! And second...we need to talk, I think my hubby and I need to do this same diet...right now I am eating way too much sugar. Can you please share more with me...and how would I do this with 2 little girls...I don't love to make 2 different meals and I lucky they eat what we eat at dinner now...let's talk girl!
ReplyDeleteYou look great and I admire BOTH of you for sticking with it as long as you did....You all looked wonderful in Hawaii. It will be easier to eat healthy now that the farmer's markets are popping up and everything in the store produce sections look better, too...But, my motto is that it's all about balance. If you are too strict, it's not something that you can stick with long term. So, I always have a few small treats, every day....a glass of wine, chocolate {something}, good whole grain carbs like a cinnamon raisin english muffin. I never had to worry too much about my weight until I hit my 40's....Now I have to exercise pretty regularly and be mindful about what goes in my mouth. I do try to set a good example for my kids, but hey, they ARE kids and I like them to enjoy summer treats, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder to stay the course!
xx Suzanne
If you need inspiration, put that awesome pic of you on your mirror. It is proof that you CAN do it. I would also put that quote under it. TRYING IS PLANNING TO FAIL. That is inspirational. You go girl!
ReplyDeleteAhahaha- dirty talk about food, that is TOO funny! I kind of do that same thing now that I am pregnant, but the hubby hasn't gotten the clue yet that he is supposed to run out and get me whatever I am craving... so it usually ends there :)
ReplyDeleteThat salad looks wonderful! I love fruit salads like that! And you look great!
I love the Jillian quote :) Great job! Your new header is FAB!
ReplyDeleteGreat for you! My husband just started getting healthy ourselves! I'm down 5 pounds and 5" in 3 weeks. We're doing Beach Body - P90X, Shakeology, & eating more clean - it's great!
ReplyDeleteI have Jillians master your metabolism book and cookbook, I do like her. that photo of hubby protecting his donuts is priceless! that would be how I look if you told me I could not have a homemade cookie.
ReplyDeleteI've replaced baking with butter to baking with coconut oil, and I love it!
You look amazing.... you go girl!! I can imagine the food got really old, but at least you started seeing results, that always make it a little easier! You should be really proud of yourself, congrats!
ReplyDeleteyeah for you, you look amazing that is a great accomplishment!!! I sooo need to do this, and I will soon! thanks for the inspiration, if you can do it, so can I right? ha!
ReplyDeleteThat is just fantastic. You look great. This summer my goal is to learn to love cooking again... it's taken a back burner to other things but home cooking, healthy clean cooking is the way to go and you are so right you feel so much better!! Great job and thanks for the incentive to cook,
ReplyDeletexo,
LuLu
Hey chicaD! Thanks for this encouragement and hinting in on the "do" word. I need to DO more than just try - that is a good thing to remember (even though Jillian haunts my dreams) this was a good post for me and good tips.
ReplyDeleteYou look awesome!
and love love your header. ooh and I just noticed your sunset pic below -- beautiful!
hugs, The Lady of the House
omgoodness. I'm so impressed with you...
ReplyDeletethis is probably my favorite post of all time. and, I'm not even kidding. you are so honest and transparent..and you showed us your pics!!!
I have pictures that I took 2 years ago when I started seriously working out again. I have pictures from last year at the one year mark.
I'm getting ready to take pictures again this August for my 2 year mark.
Here's the deal. exercise totally matters. TOTALLY. BUT, eating well does, too. And, I pretty much STINK at eating. I try to eat well...in fact, I'll do good at all my meals but then I give myself a HUGE dessert or 12 every single day.
I'm totally inspired by this post...and if I can muster up the courage...I'll post my pics. one day. (makes me tremble to even think about.)
I wonder when I'll stop comparing myself to my body at 22?
my favorite part about this post is you guys talking dirty to each other about food. I can totally picture it and it makes me laugh. You are very brave to show the before and afters. I don't know if I could.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! That is so exciting! I'm glad that is working for you!!!! you can do it!
ReplyDeleteGREAT JOB! You did so good and look fab. You have inspired me :) Keep up the good work -- you can do it :)
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! You looked pretty darn good before too, but its always a good thing to try to eat healthy. If not for us, then for our kids :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by my blog! I love to see new visitors! You made my day :)
Thanks for posting this! I so need motivation. I've been trying to sell my hubby on eating cleaner. It's so hard to do on your own. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI have a love/hate relationship with Jillian. :) She's definitely one of my fave trainers. Love that quote of hers.
I think you look great! My hubby & I could take a few lessons from you & yours:) That strawberry salad looks so yummy...gonna try it!
ReplyDeleteI admire you and you are AWESOME, period!
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons.
I am very private with everything in my life, but you teach me
it is ok to be vulnerable, to be real, to take off my mask that
covers my insecurities and breathe.
So in short my friend you inspire me and you are beautiful inside and out. I am blessed to even know you a little Becky...just blessed!
xo
Wonderful post- what great inspiration you are Becky.
ReplyDeleteThe recipes look amazing.
I want to lose weight so bad...but I am horrible at staying committed! My hubby has been doing P90x and has lost 20 lbs! I need to get off my butt and start doing it too. :)
ReplyDeleteYou look great, btw!
xo,
Adrienne
