Gaining focus

At church this week, our worship leader referred to someone in the choir asking him to repeat what his answer was to why we worship...his response was "so that the things of this earth would grow strangely dim."

I got chills...recalling that song, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus". I can't get those words out of my head. It's so true. The reason we worship and adore our savior, the reason we open our Bible, the reason we call out to Him is that this Earth and it's craziness would lose it's focus, it's hold. So the important things would become clear and we could feel... even for a second His peace, His presence and His provision for our lives.

I know I want that with my whole being. I want my gaze to be on Him, not me. What does He want for my life? What do I do next? It almost seems that the more I pour my focus into what I want the fuzzier it gets. To stand back and invite Him in....oh it's so sweet. I trust Him. I know He loves me and I know that His plan for my life will come to pass.

So with this song in my heart... may I, may you - turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.

Have a blessed day.

  6. Becky, I have been praying for my personal relationship with God to deepen. Some days I feel, like you said, that the harder I try the fuzzier things feel.
You are a vessel from God with your words...:)

  8. Thank you so much for this lovely post! I have so much to do today, and my focus is on getting as much done as possible, not on asking Him to bless what I am doing and focusing on Him. That is one of my favorite hymns, too, so I shouldn't have to be reminded, but I do. So thank you very much! Blessings . . . another Becky

  17. A truly beautiful post Becky!!! It's easy to lose sight of what really matters and of Him...funny thing is when we stay focused on Him, there is so much more clarity in all that we do...

Hoping your week is a fantastic one :)

  18. Thanks Becky...I agree fully...we need to be "in the world but not of the world" for sure. If our focus is on Jesus Christ and we are striving to be like him...thats where we find happiness. Thank you sweet lady!

  23. Hi Miss Becky!

Would you be my Aunt?? You would fit right in.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus is my favorite hymn. Normally I have a hard time picking a favorite, but not when it comes to this. Whenever I sit down to play it, I cry every time. It means a lot to hear someone else talk pretty about it.

    Think about my proposition! ;)

  25. I've always loved that song. Reminds me of childhood and sitting in the front pew with my mother... did I ever tell you that if I stepped out of line during one of my father's sermons, one of two things would happen? One- either my father would spontaneously mention me in a story or illustration in the pulpit (which would always get my immediate attention) OR two- my mother would slowly begin to unzip her purse and pull out her wooden spoon. The one she used to spank my behind! I know that woman would have spanked me right then and there in the front of that entire congregation if I'd have pushed her too! Gosh, I miss hymns. And pews.

  32. Hello Becky - what a beautiful post. I know that song and have sung it many times. But never have I focused in on those words that the "things of this earth will grow strangely dim." It caused me to stop and think about it deeper. Thank you for sharing!

  33. Oh how beautiful are those words, "turn your eyes upon Jesus." He already knows our design and what is to come. And the "things of this earth will grow strangely dim", wow, why spend precious time in worrying?

Thank you Becky for reminding me to keep the focus where it belongs. The journey is so much more meaningful and exciting when you have the master designer working for ya.

    Smiles to you,
    Lee Ann
