Garden Box Project

One thing I have always wanted to do, but have never gotten around to is plant a garden. My folks had one when I was growing up and I just loved helping and reaping the reward of yummy fresh garden fruits and veggies.

So this weekend my wish became a reality. Erin and Jake (remember their gorgeous house tour) are starting a business called the Garden Box. Basically they are building boxes and selling them to suburbanites like myself that have limited room. The concept is called square foot gardening and basically in my 9 X 3 box I can produce a garden that is 80% smaller than a normal garden plot, but gets the same yield! Isn't that fantastic?!

We decided to use the slop behind our garage for the garden. It is a space that has no purpose and it gets lots of sunlight etc...

Jake and Erin not only make the boxes, but they offer a full service plan where they will actually help you plan and plant your garden. They brought all of the supplies: box, dirt, compost, manure and the veggies. This is great for me because that is the part I get overwhelmed with. The when, what and where.

The Chicks jumped right in and wanted to be a part of everything. I really think this is a valuable teaching experience and might possibly help my little one eat more veggies:)

The finished project!! We planted a salsa garden with Roma and Wisconsin 55 tomatoes, cilantro, several different peppers, chives, basil, peas, onions and some Marigolds to help rid pests. I will keep you posted this Summer to let you know how our Garden Box project is working out. If you live in the Minneapolis area and are interested in this great service let me know.

Have a blessed day!
