it is well with my soul

We go to a contemporary service at church.  Actually there isn't a choice, and most of the time I love it, but there is a part of me that misses the hymns.  The old familiar songs I grew up with as a child.  This Sunday I was singing along and all of a sudden they started one of my very favorites...It is Well With my Soul.  Oh how I love that song.

When I was in high school our church choir went over to England and I was one of the "signers".  I stood in front of the various congregations, nervously shaking to my core, and fluidly did the sign language to that beautiful song.  At sixteen I didn't really understand the significance of the lyrics...the power in this man's message.

Horatio Spafford pinned this song after he had just lost his four daughters in a shipwreck.  He was in complete and utter despair.  UTTER DESPAIR!  Can you imagine?  And yet he wrote this:

  1. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
    When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
    • Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
  2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
    Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
  3. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
  4. For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
  5. But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
    The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!
  6. And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
    The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

I look at my own life and all that I hold dear and I think to myself would I be able to whisper those words if I lost it all?  Would I have that complete faith and trust in my Lord on that day?

Would my focus be on what really matters?...that our lives here are temporary and that heaven is our real home.  That my sins are nailed to that cross and I don't have to carry them anymore.  I love his focus.  I love that despite his pain, he kept the truth close to his heart and didn't go down that path of why me?

These people are my everything, but they aren't really mine.  They are loaners.  They are entrusted to me, but ultimately they are HIS, as is everything
Oh to be able to say and mean it to the core...It is Well with My Soul.

Have a blessed day.

  1. Oh, so true! I think about that often with my kids. They're just on loan, but they are cared for by an ETERNAL king. Amen.

  2. Last Wednesday night my grandpa asked us to sing this song to him. He was at the end of his 3 year battle with cancer and ready to trade in his broken hurting body for one that will never grow old. Since that night I have read over the lyrics several times and have gone through similar thoughts as the ones you shared. Thanks for posting this Becky.

  4. Beautiful post Becky! I heard a quote once that I often repeat to myself..."It may not be well with my circumstances, but it is well with my soul." I can not hear that beautiful hymn and not tear up every time. Have a blessed day! xo

  7. That song is one of my all-time favorites. Whenever we sing it in church, I can't help but well up with tears of gratitude for what Christ has done for me. Beautiful family, beautiful pictures, and beautiful words.

  8. the photos and your words are very powerful...thank you for this!!

I ask myself the same questions...
I, too, know that all I have and love is not mine..but His...

    and the hymn?? Beautiful
    music is my prayer
I am so A.D.H.D. that when I try to sit a pray quietly, I always end up planning a grocery list or thinking of what needs to be done around the house.

But when I sing!!!! I pray without interruption. My heart swells. I know I can glorify God with my voice!!!

you should stop by my blog and enter my beautiful give away!!!!!

love to you and that beautiful soul.

  10. This post ministered to me in a beautiful way this afternoon, Becky. Thank you for the reminder! When I was a little girl, I used to get very teary-eyed in church and wondered what in the world was happening to me. Years later, when I finally received Jesus, the Holy Spirit said, "You were crying out for Me." Only the Lord can fill that need, and I am so grateful that He did that for me!!!

  11. we sang this song on sunday, too! it's one of my favorite hymns. i sing it to my kids. i often think of how my family isn't mine and what would i do if i lost them. it's so hard to hold them with an open hand. thanks for this post. it spoke to my heart today.

  12. Whoosh! That's a good one! And a test I hope I will never have to pass :( I also love Amazing Grace for the same reason...the history and meaning for its existence. And when my Gabe was just 3 years old, I would "catch" him humming the tune to Come Thou Fount. So of course, that's a favorite now, too :) My boys, and hopefully Nora someday, go to a Christian school where once a month, for an entire month, they learn a new hymn. I love even more that they are learning the history behind each one.

And again, I must say, you are a DOLLY in braids! LOVE your family pic on the beach :)

p.s. I thought you might enjoy this tidbit: I do not own a dog.....unless you count Nora as a puppy. She is sitting under the kitchen table this very moment licking my shin......and eating an occasional stray Cherrio.

  13. Oh, Becky, thank you. It has been a rough week (only Tuesday) and I so needed to be reminded of those lyrics and the truth behind them.

  14. For some reason I fight to give over the worry about my family being safe, and how I would survive if something happened to them. No matter how great I think my faith is, I am reminded that I don't give it all to Him.

    So love your thoughts today!

  18. I tried to comment earlier, but couldn't for some reason? I like this song, too, and this post resounded with me. Last summer, I spoke about how much pain we bring upon ourselves by claiming and clutching things that don't belong to us. What day next week can we have lunch to celebrate your b-day? I can do any day but Thurs...

  24. Gosh, WHAT a
    story....I honestly
    can say that I do
    not think I would
    have the strength
    of the song's author.
    It is definitely a
    different way of
    viewing life. Love
    all the pics of your
    sweeties!

  25. I understand what you mean about missing the hymns in church, Becky. I feel the same way. And believe it or not, "It Is Well" is MY all time fav one. Well, that and "Amazing Grace". :) But your words today really made me stop and think about all of the people and things that I love, and could I give them all up and still sing that song? Wow. Very powerful, thought-provoking, and inspiring. ♥ Thanks for being such a special sister-in-Christ....

    xoxo laurie

  30. Well, thanks Becky for such a beautiful reminder and for moving me to tears this morning. (It doesn't take much these days.) :o)

I will be in your "neck of the woods" next week. I'll be in Williamsburg to celebrate my precious Aunt's 90th b'day.

You always bring a smile to my heart! Joy to you my friend!

  31. This is one of my husband and I's favorite hymns...the story behind it always gives me the chills. I cant imagine having his strength in such a horrible time. Last week my husbands friend passed away after a very short (6wk) cancer battle. Somehow, my husband was asked to pick the music...this was the song he chose. It was beautiful and was exactly what his friend would have wanted. thanks for your words, friend....

  32. I LOVE that song too. It's so great...to think what he must have been going through when he wrote it just adds to its beauty.

How sweet are you to give me a shout out?! Sooo sweet!! Thank you :)

Running for 30 minutes without dying?! LOVE that!!

    XOXO,

  35. I cry every time I hear this hymn.

It was a few months ago when I first learned the background of its author. Now, in addition to being truly moving, it has become an inspiration and challenge to my faith.

I feel every word you wrote. Thank you for articulating your thoughts!

  36. Hi Becky,

I just have to tell you that I ordered one of your awesome cuffs to give to my niece for her college graduation (the bless you cuff). It came and I immediately tried it on - so cute! Though tempted I didn't keep it. Thanks for sharing your talent with us! I know my niece is going to love it and I get to remind her of God's love and blessings without saying a word. (Oh and the packaging? Love it!)

    All my best, Tami

  38. Oh how I love that first photo!!! What a gorgeous shot. And I love your family photo.. I can sure tell that God has blessed you all..with his JOY. ♥

I really grieved when my oldest daughter moved so far away to PA...but we raised our daughters to embrace what God called them to do one day. Since she is married to a pastor, I can't really argue with God about the distance. Remembering that our children are on loan to us is really important, so I'm glad you understand that too, by the comment you made. Your chics look older every time you post a new photo of them. Big Chick is looking more like her momma now.

Love that song too and I really needed to hear it tonight. Thank you!

  44. So funny..Grace just got back from San Diego!
Over the years I have read that story and it is way beyond what my mind and heart can imagine. The depth of his trust in God..his relationship real. It was shown in his life actions wasn't it?
That is one of my all time favorite hymns!
Somedays I just want to give ya a hug:)
Happy Friday..enjoy every piece of it

  45. I love that hymn and I miss the songs too. It maes me sad that our children are not learning the deep theology that is in the hymns. I would really appreciate a mixture of music. I don't like an old hymn jazzed up though.
Love the California photos I knew that's where you were theres no place like it.
