I was recently asked to go on a book tour. I was so oblivious. Seriously I was like uh publisher lady...not sure if that will work in my schedule. You know I have kids and a honey right?? She probably thought I was a crazy loon. In fact being on a book tour just meant giving my opinion about the book...not going on tour like a rock star;) DUH! Okay I guess I can squeeze that in...hee hee!
So I get this book (Food Rules by Michael Pollan) in the mail and I start reading and at first I was like this isn't rocket science, it's all very common sense. Then the genius of it all started kicking in. We are so warped by this diet and that report etc...that we have no idea what to do any more regarding food.
This author breaks it down wonderfully into three parts. What should I eat? What kind of food should I eat? How should I eat? His mission was to more or less prove that our grandparents had all the wisdom in this area. Lots of people wrote in and helped him out and he came up with 83 rules.
My favorite part of the book were the illustrations of course. Apparently this is a new edition and the illustrations are a new added improvement. I can only imagine how much they contributed to the original book. The artist Maira Kalman was fantastic. I loved her simple, colorful pages. They drew me in 100%.
The beauty of the Food Rules book is that you don't have to follow every single rule. It's not about that. Even if you change a few bad habits and incorporate some of the rules your health will benefit. My favorite rules were:
40. Make water your beverage of choice.
45. Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.
50. Avoid ingredients that lie to your body.
56. Eat when you are hungry not when you are bored.
69. Order the small.
79. Treat treats as treats.
I think I have some new "rules" to try and follow;) Great stocking stuffer.
Have a blessed day.

What beautiful illustrations, very creative - they remind me of your painting style actually :)
ReplyDeleteYour comment about the book tour made me laugh...I was visualising you on tour bus, hanging out, ya know?! XX
How cute! I think that rule 45 is the best, and so true!
ReplyDeleteI read the older version of the book - paperback and very small. Loved the whole idea - especially about not eating things that your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food (think Gogurt tubes!) Thanks for sharing so I could see the newer version. The illustrations are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThat books looks really fun! I like the rules you picked, too! So simple, yet still a challenge. Have a great day, Becky!
ReplyDeleteReally great book, read it a few months ago, as part of a challenge from my friend Tracey and then did a "book report". http://chaospatrol.blogspot.com/2011/10/challenge-wednesday-book-report.html
ReplyDeleteNow I actually have to start USING the rules! ;-)
At first glance, I thought the illustrations were yours. Good rules. Welcome to the tour. :)
ReplyDeleteyeah for 275. and 276. :D this looks like a great book. i need to figure it out myself...maybe this book would help. maybe i should buy it for jarrod's stocking and read it myself ;)
ReplyDeletesounds like a great read! I like the rule about not eating sweets unless you make them yourself. That's an awesome rule! (and one I'm breaking right now!!)
ReplyDeleteMy hubby has been doing GREAT with his new diabetic diet (lost 26lbs and blood sugar is totally under control), but I seem to have totally picked up all his old bad habits. :(
Huh. Maybe YOUR grandparents had wisdom in this area. My grandma was a very large woman. She baked and cooked everything herself, and she used a whole lot of lard. I'll add: if I ate all my own junk food, I'd still be chunky, 'cause you know I bake constantly. Still, it sounds like I would benefit from following some of these rules. I'm about to have to give up most bread, sugar, pasta, and milk. It makes me sad to think of doing this at Christmastime, but--if I don't--I'm going to get really sick.
ReplyDeleteThe illustrations are great: very Becksterish!
Great book and fast read - his other book The Omnivore's Dilemma goes into a lot of detail regarding where our food comes from and why that isn't good. We really try to follow these rules in our cooking, and I have to say I smile inside and out when our kids prefer my treats to store bought ones.

I am SO getting this book! I've recently been trying to rethink my approach to food....for myself and my family's sake. I think about it all. the. time. especially since my Nora girl was born....being over-weight is a common characteristic for others like her :(.
ReplyDeleteAnd like so many others, I thought it was your artwork, too :) So very precious. Thank you so much for sharing it. Because you shared Jesus Calling for Kids, I bought that one, too...plus 2 more for gifts :) See how inspiring you are?
Blessings!
A computer free day is on my wish list right now ~ I am going to take a stab at it soon ~ wish me luck! I love the one that says eat all the junk food you want as long as you make it ~ makes sense doesn't it! Happy Wednesday Becky. xo

ReplyDeleteThis book changed the way we viewed and ate food. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like I need to add that book to my Christmas list, Becky. There's definitely "food for thought" in there! I'm back on my diet now so I need to read these words of wisdom. :)

i have seen several people mention this book lately, now i want to read it myself, i think. i had to laugh at you thinking you were going on a book tour ; ) i love it!
ReplyDeleteI need this book. I only drink water, coffee and skim milk in my proteins shake.I finally kicked Diet Coke. I had one on this trip and it didn't taste like I thought it would. The thrill is gone! I had lost about 10 lbs before this trip. I have had a few upsets in the last couple of days. I am anxious to get back home and back with my program. Love the pics in the book. No wonder you did too...they reminded me or your style.
ReplyDeleteVery cute, sounds interesting! And yes, the illustrations are beautiful and totally make the book! ;)
ReplyDelete...I just don't think rule 45 would work too good for me, I bake WAY too often! ;) lol!
looks wonderful, becky. i love all the concepts you mentioned. i just started (last july :) eating "paleo" .. something a lot of crossfitters follow. my first thought was great! another cabbage soup diet! turns out to be awesome... all real foods, and i'm loving it.
ReplyDeletetho, i had ice cream today. :)
I was wondering how you were going to swing that "book tour", too! haha
