Road to Change

As most of you know who follow along, I am on a "weight loss journey". For me this journey will never end. On my mother's side they are all very obese and I have seen first hand the hardships that this brings. My mom has battled her weight for as long as I can remember. Diet after diet and failed attempts over and over have been the norm. Recently she was diagnosed with Diabetes and for once she is getting a handle on her appetite. Her body had certain "requirements" and for her it was the missing key she was looking for. Since May she has lost 25 pounds through a changed diet and with medicine. I am so happy that she is making strides and seeing results. I can't wait for her to realize her dreams of "getting her weight off". It's been such a long road and I'm so proud of her.

Sometimes the road to change is a long one and we may stumble around awhile before we find it. The important thing is to not miss it altogether!! It's never too late to jump on and enjoy the ride:)

Have a blessed day.

  2. So glad to hear she is doing well. My dad was recently diagnosed as well. I believe it's a blessing in disguise. It is helping us all make better eating decisions. Good luck on your journey :)

  3. I completely understand. My mother's side is very petite, small boned women. However, I'm fighting the genes on my father's side. It will probably always be a struggle, but one I'm willing to fight to be healthy for my family.

  4. Me and the fam went to Krispy Kremes tonight. Been thinking about it for a week now so decided to get it out of my system. My diet and exercising starts tomorrow of course. Never ending cravings is my vice.

  5. That is great news about your mom, wow!
I too am on a weight loss journey....I take after my father's side where all the women struggle with their weight - my mother and I are totally different shapes altho she has been an on/off member of WW for as long as I can remember! She is doing well now though just by eating sensibly.

I was just thinking about this very issue last night and have set myself a mini weight loss goal for 4 wks time when we leave for Italy and then another one for when school goes back in September.

Hang on in there Becky.....I lost a lot of weight very quickly 2 years ago and then regained it all. I would never do that again, this time I am doing it slowly and surely - although on hot days like day, I wish I had done it more quickly!

    Have a great day :)

  7. One of the hardest jobs in my life was to inject insulin in my mom.

She had a plethora of tablets and meds for every day of the week in a plastic tube, of days marked, for memory.

But the sugar levels had to be checked numerous times daily
(devices to do this are much better these days). It always involves drawing blood.

I was afraid I would hurt her with the needle, until she finally yelled at me for going slow, and said "Poke it in!". I still feel the pain of the needle injecting, though she died a year ago.

I am against weight loss as pressure on women to be beautiful in image, and warn my daughters to NOT get trapped in that deception. There are plenty of guys who fall in love with a woman, who is bigger around than a palm frond. (Those gals seem more fun too).
Image aside, peer pressure aside, take care of your weight.
Diabetes is a new way of life that makes losing weight seem a joy by comparison.

Tell your mom a stranger prays for her health this very day.
    God bless you abundantly.

  8. I occasionally ask myself what kind of wake up call do I need to understand healthy lifestyle as more than a way to change my appearance? What do I need to commit?

Your mom got the wake up call.
    She answered well.
    Hooray Becky's mom!

  10. Good for your Mom! I don't know her but I am very happy for her. And I can relate. I have battled weight issues my whole life, as have almost all the women, and some of the men, in my family. It is a battle that will never end...healthy habits have to be a way of life. Thank you for the inspiration!!!

  13. Why does the road to change have to be so long and so hard? Maybe so that we never want to go back and have to start all over again...

  16. BRAVO! Accepting that one has diabetes and then becoming compliant about the diet change is a huge accomplishment and very RARE! Your mom is doing an awesome job. I am on a weight loss journey too, 7 off 60 pounds to go.

that is so wonderful she is trying to make a change....it's hard work, especially when you have to train people (I used to be a personal trainer) who have diabetes...it's a whole life change...

  19. Hey, question for ya.
What is the "just stopping by from SITS" I keep seeing on your blog and other blogs?

I feel so left out not knowing... thought you might be the person to ask since I see it often on yours...

  23. YAY to your mama! That is really great!

Your post really touched me today. Even though it was about a weight loss journey, your words "road to change" hit a chord with me. Trying times over here. I'm following that road!

  24. Wow. I'm amazed at how many people are having friends and family diagnosed. My father was just diagnosed with diabetes about two years ago. It's been life-changing for our family. He's feeling so much better now that his diet is under control. I felt lucky that during my pregnancies I wasn't even close to having gestational diabetes, but I'll keep being checked just to make sure.
