I'm sitting here in my darkened office. The rain is coming down hard. In the background, in between the showers, I hear tree frogs croaking. Oh how I love to hear them sing. Every now and then I crave a dark stormy day. It quiets my soul..beckons me slow down. It awakens my senses.
This past week I fought some kind of virus. My stomach was a mess. I had absolutely no energy. When I'm sick I go into stealth mode. I quiet down. I walk a little slower. I avoid talking. When I lie down it's in the fetal position. I look for comfort in any shape I can find. I texted my friends to lift me up in prayer. That's what friends are for right? To lift up.

Is there anything more comforting than hot tea? I'm not sure if it's a southern thing or not, but my girls here are into tea parties. I feel the need to get up to speed with the tea thing. I'm more of a coffee girl, but I am finding that tea hits the spot. It soothes me to my toes.
I found myself at HomeGoods recently (shocker I know) hunting down the perfect tea kettle. Somehow microwaving a tea cup didn't seem appropriate for company. So my first step in the tea thing was to invest in a real live kettle...one that whistles. I know. I feel so fancy now, like I could almost pass for tea person;) Next is a tea set I guess. Maybe that should be the thing I hunt for when I go antiquing...gradually build a little mismatched set. Sounds fun.
Target has these new dishes in their white collection. Oh how I love to hold my bumpy textured mug and sip on this Aveda tea. Have you had it? It's seriously the best tea I've ever tasted. It has this sweetness that zings ya. You are not expecting it and then there it is. No honey or sugar needed. Perfection.

Speaking of honey did you know that a tsp a day of local honey a day can help seasonal allergies?? A friend of mine who is all into natural remedies told me this lately, and it seems to make sense. Luckily I have another friend who is a beekeeper. SCORE! Is that not the coolest thing ever;) So I'm pretty sure I'm golden on local honey...yay! I've never been a big honey fan, but if it can keep the scary Virginia allergies at bay I'm all in. Apparently I live in a very high allergy state...oh joy. Dang those trees!
Another thing that I crave...that soothes me when I'm sick is Cream of Wheat. My momma used to make this for me growing up. On my icky days last week I wanted some SO BAD and we were out! Couldn't wait to get my hands on a box. I'm curious...what comforts you??
Have a blessed day.

My mom loves tea. I think it is such a nice thing to drink. It helps me slow down and celebrate moments of ordinary.
My husband and I love coffee, but every morning we brew a big pot of tea and there is nothing like that first few sips of tea that kind of burn on the way down. I can tell you that VA allergies are awful, esp Richmond. I never had spring allergies until I had lived in Richmond about 6 years, and since then I have had them. Does your beekeeper friend sell their honey? My sister-in-law in Atlanta sends me some of her honey, but I would love to find a local source.
I keep meaning to ask you, have you found the store called Gather yet? A lovely shop in Chesterfield, with home decor and wonderful things. The owner is an artist and I know that you would really like her a lot. I believe their website is shop gather.com.
I need my java in the morning but anytime after that I love a big cuppa tea. I like mine with milk and at night a bit of honey. Hope you are feeling better today ~ stomach bugs can really get the best of you can't they? Tea & toast were a staple at home when we weren't feeling well! Cream of Wheat reminds me of my Grampy ~ he loved it but I have never been a fan. Hope you are feeling better today. xo
Sorry you weren't feeling well. Glad you are better. You described how I felt last week recovering from an illness. It was strange...esp. walking slower.
I have been drinking the Sleepy Time tea by Celestrial . Not sure I spelled that right. I love going to their plant in Colorado. I will look for the your tea.
I have several different problems with my digestive system.......when it goes really bad I eat rice baby cereal. Just like starting over.
(((((HUGS)))))
Hi Becky!
First off, I LOVE your blog! I'm new here, and SO GLAD I stumbled upon it. I cannot wait to keep coming back to visit. :)
I really like your decorating style and I love your home. It's so inspiring to me.
I'm sorry to hear you were sick. When I have a sore throat, I definitely go for hot tea with honey. If it's stomach issues, I stick with either bread or crackers and some plain ol' 7up.
I can't believe it, but I've never actually had Creme of Wheat. But when I was little, I remember my Mom making me white rice, then she would add milk and a little sugar on top. Some might think that's a weird combo, but for me I still find it comforting for the soul. :)
Have a great day!
So sorry to read you aren't feeling good! That was the case for me last week- ugh! You pretty much summed up my cozy list- but I would just have to add a good ol' pair of cozy pants- aka, anything with elastic waist.:) Enjoy your cozy stormy day!
Ps- I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new necklace! I'll be wearing it all week as a reminder!
i wish healthy things comforted me... it's more like chocolate. : ) but that honey wisdom is good to hear! i want to give it a shot. i love tea. i want to try your fave. i usually love Tazo Calm tea. and yes! cream of wheat brings back lots of memories from growing up. i need some now. hope you are feeling like yourself again! xoxo.
Becky what a nice post! Makes want to stay in today and just enjoy the comforts of my little home :) Thank´s for being a sweetheart!
So very sorry to hear that you've been sick, Becky! I, too, love hot tea, but am not a fan of coffee, at all. Weird, I know! When I'm under the weather, I like to curl up on my bed with plenty of covers on top and doze the day away!
Glad you are feeling better. Sorry that you were sick but I'm with you - sometimes I like those days. Are you going to Pearls and Grace in Nashville this weekend?
i love a dark, stormy day once and a while, too.
something so calming about it.
i'm glad you're feeling better!
i hope your week is wonderful!
xo
Hope you're feeling better. I hadn't heard the honey thing before but I'm going to try dosing my hubby with it. Luckily we had a friend from work with bees that gave us a couple of quarts. Hopefully it will help his allergies.
I'm with you on a good rainy day!
Normally those storms force me to turn off the computer and tv and just cuddle up with a book and...yes....a cup of tea!
I became an Earl Grey fan a while back..so yummy...with a spoonful of local honey.
I learned about honey and it's allergy repulsion tactics when we were in Austin, I just need to find a good local honey here...no whole foods to buy some from :(
I hope you are feeling better! Bitsy had a bug too and then of course I got a little bit of it...we are doing much better now, looking forward to the sunnier and warmer days ahead!
Big hugs!
Biz
The tip about the honey has been noted! I have never heard of it, and definitely could use something for my dang allergies.
I have some teas...but struggle with drinking them. I need to perfect that routine.
Oh, it was fun to see your face and cute outfit on Jeanne's blog! :)
Hi sweet pea. I hope you're feeling all better again today! Maybe we can talk and catch up.
I used to eat cream of wheat too. So funny- (can't eat it now of course) and local honey and tea sounds heavenly! I've been into this coconut chai tea lately... it's rocking my world. LOL
love ya babe.
S
i'm a coffee lover through and through, even more so since i got my espresso machine. my hubby was a hard core tea drinker, but i have him taking a latte to work everyday. it could be one of my all time favorite things ever!!! i'm jealous over your new tea kettle. mine looks like it's about a million years old....
I start everyday with a cup of tea! Cream of Wheat is my favorite! i prefer it to oatmeal. My mom made it all the time for me as well, and when i was pregnant i craved it for dinner.
xo,
Lulu
Oh flashback...my mom used to make me Cream of Wheat, too, when I was little!! Haven't had it in forever. I'm both a tea & coffee drinker; but, when I'm under the weather, it's only tea for me:) Wishing you well Becky!
P.S. Love the darling pics of you modeling Jeanne's fashion:) So lovely!
Oh my goodness, I love that you are a Cream of Wheat girl. Looks like some of your other readers/friends are, too. Yum!
Isn't tea relaxing? My mama says the key is to bring the water to just boiling (too much boiling and the water loses oxygen and flavor) and then pour the water over the tea bag to "shock" it and bring out the most flavor. Those mamas are smart ladies so I listen to her. :) She makes a mean cup of tea.
I've been collecting tea pieces since I was married. A tea cup on vaction, a sugar spoon as a gift. It's a fun way to collect a tea set that is personalized with stories and love. It also keeps me on budget since I collect pieces verrry slowly.
Hope you feel better soon, Becky!
I love sweets but when I'm sick it's more like savory stick to your ribs food. My favorite tea is Good Earth Original blend it's a sweet & spicy taste no sweetener needed. The whistle of a kettle reminds me of my Dad who loved instant coffee and tea.
Feel better!
I live in Los Angeles, and my lung doctor, who is a national leader in his field, suggested a teaspoon of unprocessed, RAW honey daily to help my lungs get better. He said, "We doctors don't know exactly why it helps, but we've known about it for generations."
I love that a guy at the top of his very high-tech field also uses low-tech, time-tested remedies.
Sorry you have been under the weather...I am actually home today with a bit of a headache.
As for tea, I love unsweetened iced tea. We bought the Lipton Iced Tea maker, and we buy big boxes of organic tea at Tjmaxx or Marshall's, and whip up a couple of batches for the week. So refreshing. I'm not a big hot drink kinda girl.
CREAM OF WHEAT!!!!! Oh, yummy! It reminds me of my dad. He introduced it to me when he and my sisters were on our own. He always made it lumpy. So of course, I LOVE the lumpy chewy chunks :)
I also love a warm bath and a heavy blanket afterwards; especially the one my grandma made.......Aaaww, curling up for a nap with that blanket is PURE comfort!
Hope you're feeling better, and thanks for the reminder of the local honey!!! I forgot all about that, and we have terrible allergies here (just wish I liked it more....or even a little : / )
Oh, girlie, so sad
you were down under
and didn't text me for
prayer : (. You were
already on my mind with
Junk Market, so maybe
you felt the good vibes!
Our whole family has been
Getting into tea this winter.
And organic, RAW honey
offers even better benefits
and is amazing!
xx Suzanne
PS: How in the
world did you help
A move feeling like
this? You are an angel.
I love tea too and a good blanket. Wish I had a lap top so I could lay in bed reading blogs when I feel icky. Hey I saw your new rug ohttp://mail.aol.com/35683-111/aol-6/en-us/Suite.aspxn houze
Dont know if you can get there from my cut/paste but Im sure you know the way
I haven't had cream of wheat in years. Your honey looks really good. We buy our honey by the box. Seriously. We love it and we don't get the kind from the store. Most of it isn't REAL 100% honey, but a mix. Supposedly if it's a certain percentage of honey, they can label it honey. The rest is corn syrup.
I find that--when I'm sick--I still want my mom. Unfortunately, she's far away. I settle for naps, flannel/fleece, chicken noodle soup (and I really only want the gross Campbell's kind out the can), 7Up, jamas, and sometimes brownies depending upon whether or not it's a stomach bug. What are the girls doing today? Mine are napping, but Cade's playing XBox.
Hope you're feeling better! I have weird stomach problems lately too. I'm wondering if I don't have food allergies or something... So I know alllll about the fetal position! Those dishes from Target are awesome! I didn't know they had them! It looks like milk glass... which I'm totally obsessed with! :)
I'm jealous of everything about this today - the tea, the gorgeous cup, you have bees that work for you? Enjoy it for me, please.
My Q calls it "Creamy'uh Wheat" it's so cute. He loves it! I love a dark rainy day as well...it's good to slow down sometimes. And tea! Yes! We love tea, and tea parties. My Mama and I have a few every year and invite our friends. It's a good ol' time.
You have hit all my comfort foods. Tea with honey (right now I have honey from NC that friends brought - Sourwood) and Cream of Wheat reminds me of being a child and having it to fill my stomach on winter mornings. My mother always put raisins in it and sprinkled it with brown sugar. I make it once in awhile if the temps allow in Florida, but I can never get it just like my mother did. Thanks for stirring some nice memories. Ann
I like to curl up under a warm cozy blanket on the couch and watch tv, because I rarely do! Love the milk glass mug. I'm working on building a mismatched tea set too, isn't it fun?!
Oh I am so sorry that you were feeling so sick. I hope thatyour feeling much better today. I do not dreink very often, I like coffee. But the tea that you shared with us sounds good so I will have to try it. Love your new tea kettle and white mug. When I am feeling very sick I do not want anything! Just peace and quiet and lots of rest. :)
Mary
you're not sick anymore are ya??? :) i've never tried cream of wheat and i probably won't...i have a texture thing...
but i do love a good smelling candle and quiet. also?? i LOVE that aveda tea. l.o.v.e. i used to get my hair done at aveda and they would give that to me while i did. SO GOOD! i had no idea you could buy it like that...yeah!!
I hope you are feeling better! Wow, you are some great friend to help Alicia out when you were sick!!
I am not a tea person, but I do like the fruity teas...Tazo Berry Blossom is my fave!
I'm a tea FREAK! A Teak? Anyway. Cory bought me a real tea kettle for Christmas and I used it every single day. So much better than nuking it! Last week I burned it up though. I thought I was boiling a pot of water, but I had the wrong burner on and my empty kettle took a beating. Ouch.
Hope you're feeling better soon, Becks.
Do you like ginger? My all-time favorite "tea" is hot water with a squeeze of honey, the juice of a lemon wedge and three slices of fresh ginger. YUM!!!
I am a coffee girl too! BUT, I think I might try that tea because I need to cut back on the coffee...or maybe its what I put in my coffee that I need to cut back on, sugar! Ha! Also, we buy local honeycomb for the same reason. My husband likes to chew on it like its candy. It works for him.
I am new here too! So glad you are feeling better. :)
:0 Im having tea now. I have a mini tea pot that sits on top of my tea cup. Its so cute. I wish I had more of them.
CUTE picks of you over at J Oliver site. Really cute.
That tea sounds so good, Becky! And Cream of Wheat....?? Oh, yeah! I grew up eating that on cold winter mornings before walking to school.(yeah...about 3/4 of a mile) I love it! In fact, I have some in my pantry right now....and I plan on having some tomorrow morning! Hope that you're feeling better soon, sweetie. Hugs to you.
xoxo laurie
I hope you're feeling all the way better. I love your new mug and maybe I should try that tea.
I hope you are feeling better. I love tea everyday ... and when I don't feel well, I like coke on ice.
Fondly,
Glenda
my hubby started drinking green tea and for christmas received an electric tea pot. he loves it...i wanted one like yours, but i am a coffee drinker to the core so it doesn't matter what i want. i love iced tea though, chai. i still use a mr. coffee iced tea maker via 1983. no kidding. i make it strong and then put it in a giant tupperware pitcher and add water. oh my i think my sleepy meds just kicked in as i am realizing the nonsense i am typing. off to bed.
:)
Feeling the same today... yuck!
I wonder if you would share the beekeeper's contact inof, if he sells? I am just slightly north of you and think it would be "local enough" to help my daughter:-)
Well you're about to learn something else about me: hubby is a beekeeper! And a balloon artist. But those are topics for another conversation:)
Love those dishes. They look like old pieces my mom has.
tea has become a regular part of my day! no coffee for lent so tea is my go-to for something warm in my hands! cream of wheat brings so many childhood memories to my mind. i will need to pick up some and that tea, too! thanks for the suggestions. lamps are totally calming for me. :)
I just found that out about the honey- I recently met a beekeeper who told me that.
Oh I've missed you. Your blog feels a bit to me like Ikea feels to you. It's like coming home. My blog is always all over the place but your blog has a consistent warmth.
