"Fresh and Simple" with Lissa

One of my resolutions for the New Year is to get more organized, declutter...stay on top of things a little better.  I have a dream to conquer one room a week.  But I'm thinking that may be too lofty.  Maybe it should be a closet or a drawer etc...  A whole room is sooo overwhelming.  My good friend Lissa is a cleaning and organizing master.  I am in awe of her mad skills, so I thought who better to inspire and motivate than her.  Today she has the floor.  Let's welcome her with open arms:)

Hi Everybody! I feel completely blessed today because Becky asked me to share my passion for home keeping and organization with you. Many of you know me through Becky but for those of you that don't I met Becky through blogging and feel so completely blessed to call her one of my BESTEST (as my girl's would say) friends. Her heart runs deeper than the grand canyon (but you already know this if you read her blog).

There is nothing on earth I enjoy more than being a stay at home mom/ wife. I adore blessing my family by preparing healthy meals, keeping a tidy home, and living a simple lifestyle. While I keep my kitchen and living room quite tidy it doesn't mean that I always expect perfection. I know that people other than me live here and that they want to be comfortable too.

Remember how Martha coined the phrase "it's a good thing?" I try to stick with "it's good enough." What's good enough for me may be different than what's good enough for you. We're not aiming for perfection here. We just want to bless our families. I know that it blesses my husband to return home from a stressful day at work to a picked up house and delicious smells coming from the kitchen. Right now we are on board with Becky's clean eating program so usually that means I get the grill started for him and have sweet potatoes or rice cooking.

Every night before we go to bed I have cleaned the kitchen, straightened the living room, and made sure that the clutter around the house has been put away. I have white cabinets throughout the house so I clean spots as I see them with a quick rub down. All year long I keep my eye out for pretty organization items. My favorites are wire baskets and galvanized bins/ toolboxes.

I have to clean with products that smell good. You will not find any pine sol or simple green under my sink. I prefer Meyer's products or ones from William's Sonoma. Part of my enjoyment of cleaning is how good the house smells when I'm done. Lately I'm obsessed with thinking about spring vacation. It makes me want my house to smell like I've just peeled a grapefruit at the beach. I know that Jo Malone started the whole fragrance combining thing but I got to thinking that you could just as easily light a grapefruit candle in the kitchen and a fleur de sel candle from Williams-Sonoma in the living room and combine those fragrances in the same way.

I will finish with my top 5 make it shine tricks.

1. spray some glass cleaner on a rag and shine all of your chrome; faucets, knobs, toaster, etc.

2. then do a quick wipe down of the toilets to make sure they're clean enough for company

3. pick up the clutter once in the morning and once in the evening before it adds up

4. do a load of laundry a day. It takes minutes to fold 1 load but once you've done 5 the pile can feel overwhelming.

5. vacuum the high traffic areas about every other day with a thorough vacuum about once a week.

**okay I have a 6th one

6. keep the clutter at a minimum. Try to buy less and therefore have less to maintain.

Do these 6 things and I think you'll find your tidying less daunting~ especially if you're using a product that smells delicious. Then all you need to do is add some fresh flowers or a bowl of fruit and voila~ "it's good enough!" (doesn't quite have the same feeling as Martha's phrase does it?" ha!

Thanks Lissa...that was awesome.  Go check out her beautiful blog Humble Pie

Have a blessed day.

  5. Yum...I can smell the grapefruit on the beach from here.

  6. I LOVE the scent of grapefruit. And...the use of the essential oil of pink grapefruit will curb hunger. Add a couple drops of pink grapefruit essential oil (NOT fragrance oil, not the same) to any unscented lotion or cleaning product and you will curb your appetite as you clean. BONUS!!

  8. Lissa is a gal after my own heart. Love the tips. It is quite amazing how clean a house looks when you just pick things up. Since I have two kids under two, I've had to let go of some (okay, not just some, ALL) of the tidiness until after they go to bed. : )

  14. Living with five boys I am always struggling to make things smell pretty. I think I am going to have to follow Lissa's example and invest in more candles! I think I hear Williams Sonoma calling my name today...

  15. Williams Sonoma had a winter fresh line of cleaning products, lotions, a couple winters ago ( not sure if they still do)...I bought a set to use for a Christmas shoot I did and then brought them home. To make a long comment short, I use the spray and the whole house smells like a walk through a balsam forrest in Maine. I use if sparingly. I need to see if I can get some more.

Thanks for the inspiration to get my butt off the computer and in to the kitchen to clean. This bright light reflecting off the snow makes everything look dusty.

    Love you playlist too!

  18. Lissa would be ashamed to see my closets!! lol :) I LOVE the idea of tackling the house one room (or closet or drawer) at a time. And living in this smaller rental, I have to do it about every other month. When it's done, it feels SO good!! :) Love these tips!

  21. Thanks Becky for sharing Lisa with me. I was feeling overwhelmed, really. Something about the new year makes me want to clean, organize and be totally in compliance. I even posted about how overwhelmed I was feeling.Lisa's "good enough" approach makes me breathe a little easier. After all, we need to work and live, right? Take care my new friend.

I love amazing smells and a very clean and organized house.

Love it that Lissa is sharing some of her great ideas. That girly has much to offer.

  25. Thanks for the great advice Lissa. I'm about to move house...a bigger house, which hopefully will help me to keep the clutter down and the house clean and tidy all the time. It's so hard to have a tidy home when it's small and you don't have anywhere near enough storage.

Hope you girls have a great day! Ky xx

  29. Phew!! I read this post around lunchtime and was so motivated that I turned into super-housewife. I've been cleaning incessantly AND with a fury!! I really, really, really needed to read this today. I'm so thankful for the post. Since Christmas, my hiney has been slacking as far as housework is concerned. I really needed a good kick in the pants to get myself going again. Lissa's first sentence, second paragraph was really motivating. It made me think about my own blessings as a Mom and a Wife and made me look at housework in a different light. So thanks you two!

  30. Lissa is great and I can see why you two connected so well. These tips were great and I will try and use these as I try and get organized too. There's nothing like a tidy home and a good meal on the table. Gives more time to love on the babies :) Thanks for sharing.

  32. Also a fan of the grapefruit/citrus scent to give my home and my senses a fresh, clean lift. This entry energized me even after finishing errands at 9:45 pm to clean up my kitchen before bed so I didn't wake to the mess in the AM!

  33. I love Lissa's phrase... I used it all the time... yep... that is good enough... lets go play... or walk the dog... or make cookies! he he ... I love citrus scents too... and I envy Lissa's white house!! SO refreshing!

After starting home schooling and buying a puppy... and then 9 months later loosing a puppy and going through the whole puppy thing again... my house was UPSIDE down and cluttered WAY beyond good enough... I was trying so hard to stay clean around so much clutter ...piles of school work and life every where... and a puppy who wanted to eat it... ;) anyway... I bring groceries home in brown paper bags. Last February I started this Bag a Day project...the goal was 30 days... it was great fun... Every day I tried to fill a brown paper bag for recycling, donating or garbage... Peter Walsh style if you will... I was a baby blogger and I even blogged about it... I didn't make it to the end... I got sucked into the blog world with my time as every baby blogger does ;) I made it to 14? the rest of the year I would pull out my bags randomly. I am slowly gutting, organizing and finding a place for everything... I reclaimed the loft/home school room and even made it mad dog friendly... kinda... he ate a pencil yesterday... he gets on Sammy's desk! anyway... now I have most of my dinning room back... just need to organize it now...and paint... there is always something! ;) yada, yada, yada... Bless you for the inspiration!!
