Sweet relief

I'm having a hard time knowing where to begin. My heart is full, I have so much to say. This last week has been extremely difficult. My best friend got news that she had a size 4 mass in her breast. It was oddly shaped and the doctor was baffled. She went in for something else and they found this thing. This really large scary thing!

When she told me I was in shock. It sounded so sure...so bad. We barely spoke on the phone because I didn't have the words. I prayed for her, but to me it sounded so lame and insignificant. As soon as we hung up I lost it. I wept and pleaded and begged God to spare her.

It brought back all sorts of memories of when we heard about Ralph...my father-in-law. I'll never forget my husband calling me as I was driving home and telling me that his dad had stage 4 lung cancer. He had never smoked in his life and here he was dying of that dreaded disease. It was like a nightmare. Up until that day our lives had been bliss. We had never really had anything awful touch us. When he got sick it rocked our security, and it felt like we weren't safe anymore.

I'd like to say over the next few days. I rallied up the strength to be strong and to be full of faith, but I struggled. Every conversation that we've had...every special memory flooded my mind. It's like I buried her before I even knew the outcome. I hate that my thoughts were all over the place and that I was so scared. Being a Christian I know the truth...that Jesus is our healer, that we are to take our thoughts captive and to have faith and really believe when we pray. But for me I was so overcome with fear I couldn't function.

The only place that offered any comfort was God's word. I found a book I'd given to Honey years ago called God's Promises for the graduate. Under the "What to do when you are afraid" section was this scripture, No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. Psalm 91:10-11. I prayed this scripture over Lori and her family and just ate up every scripture I could find on fear, healing, comfort etc... Then I emailed, called and blogged about it telling everyone I knew to pray.

Her test results finally came in and her mass was BENIGN!!! I really believe it was more than that, but God heard and answered all of our prayers and a miracle happened! We had so many people warring for her. I can't even tell you the sweet relief I feel...the overwhelming gratefulness to the Lord for sparing her, and to all of you who stood in for my friend.

I know not every story has a happy ending. Unfortunately we lost my father-in-law, and I don't know the answers to why God spares some and takes others. But I do know that we serve a great and mighty heavenly Father who does hear and answer prayer.

Thanks for listening.

  4. Why some and why not others? I have the same types of questions...back and forth.

I appreciate that Scripture (Psalm 91) so much, and just absorbing ourselves in God's Word, resting in him, safely under his wing in times like these makes all the difference no matter the outcome.

Good news this morning... I don't even know her, but I feel sweet relief, too. I've been praying.

  5. Becky, This is wonderful for your friend and you!! I love to hear good news like this.
Your snow pictures in your post before this are beautiful and the best part of spring for me would be the days are brighter and the birds are singing and we open our pool to make it look warmer outside than it really is!!! Have a great day :)

  7. I've been praying for your friend and said a special prayer this morning. When I started reading your post my heart broke for her. Then I kept reading, relating to your reaction of fear then rejoicing in your decision to immerse yourself in God's truth. Praise God!!!!! Benign is such a grace filled word to hear. I would be sobbing in praise right now if I weren't about to walk into work. Instead I am praising God for his miracles in my heart and in my eyes. Thank you for allowing us to pray for her and join the pray warrior team!!! Yay yay yay!

  8. Thank you for sharing about the power of prayer. It so amazing how God moves, He loves us all beyond comprehension. He does everything to His own honor and glory and for our own good. I thank God for your friend's diagnose, she has an incredible friend in you. I believe that even when the news is not good, we much find the blessings that God wants to bestow on us. This takes great faith and trust in God, continue Becky to inspire us all.

  10. I'm so happy to hear of her good news. Its hard to know how to react towards your friend when something so frightening happens. Even though it is the same friend and all the memories you have are just as wonderful as before there is still something different. I reacted very distant when a friend's mother died because I didn't know how to help her. I realized after it was too late that by thinking she needed to heal on her own was wrong. She just needed me! I know now from experience because my mother died that what I needed was for things to be as normal as they could be under the difficult situation. Friends are exactly what are needed and just to say, "I don't know what to say, but I want to be here for you", helps wonders!

I will say that I think you all have been given a gift. A gift not only in health but in perspective. I think life may be a bit sweeter for her and for you. Theres nothing like a big scare to make everyone appreciate the little things again :)

    I'm so happy for you!

  13. I am so much like you when receiving news like that. I do the same thing. I go over all the memories in my mind like they are gone before their time. I had many in my family suffer & perish of cancer. My Mom who had many health issues, was diagnosed with lung cancer. I remember the defeat I felt. Why couldn't I have spent more time with her? All the arguments as a teen? etc....During her time of treatment, the Gospel of Jesus was brought to her by a good friend of mine and she accepted Jesus....then she was healed. Yes, healed.45 yrs of cigarettes and healed. The look on the doctors face and my brothers as the radiologist stood there and said the tumors were gone is priceless to this day. Mom did pass away of heart failure---but Jesus broke the cancer curse in my family...Thank You Jesus. I love testimonies. God always has a testimony in every situation. I am glad your friend is ok. I also had a mediastinal tumor and it SHOULD have been alot of things--but Jesus is merciful and it was benign...sorry so long, I could testify forever. Even in our trials and pain, God has a purpose. He is praiseworthy whether its benign or malignant......for He is God.

  16. What wonderful news! One of my close friends lost her mom to breast cancer when we were 18. As a result, she needs to be tested every year because she is considered high risk and she also had a scare that fortunately turned out to be nothing.

Prayer is powerful! Every evening I pray to God while I lay in bed.

  17. Sweet relief indeed! I am so happy to hear good news about your friend:) She's been given a precious gift. Cancer is such a dreaded disease and it does strike fear in those of us who've been touched by it. Again, I am sorry for the loss of your father-in-law. And when I say, "I can relate to your words", I do... within the span of a year, my cousin & my mother were diagnosed with lung cancer. Danny won his fight, my mother did not. It's a grief I wouldn't wish on anyone. So gad your friend was spared:)

  18. What a huge, huge relief! Thank you Lord for this answered prayer. I'm so glad she doesn't have to go through this horrible disease, and that you don't have to watch your friend suffer. Thanks for sharing this great news. Praying that in the aftermath of this emotional roller coaster you find comfort in the arms of your Savior.

  19. Dear Becky,
I am truly happy for you and your friend. Unfortunately, I lost my two best friends to cancer last year! (January 9 and June 4). Now I have to watch their children grow up without their mums. They neither smoked and were extremely healthy women. Go figure! Unfortunately it made me lose my faith in God. Made me think that if there is a God then he doesn't seem just or one to give a damn.
Nonetheless, I continue to pray (or something between prayer and meditation and crying).
One thing I remember one of my two friends saying is this: "I'm glad it happened to me and not my children."

    Take care.

  22. hi becky, i recently found your blog and i'm so incredibly glad i did, i want to send you an enormous thank you for creating it! you're blog -or better said you and your life, are a great inspiration to so many people, thank you becky for sharing with us! and a very special thank you for your latest post, like so many others i have had your friend on my mind ever since you wrote about her, hoping and praying she's going to be ok. reading your post this morning was a wonderful way of starting a new day, i'm very happy for you and your friend!

the question about why some and why not others remains a mistery to me, as i too have lost many loved ones. but we have to be extra grateful of the ones that do get spared, and cherish the special times we had with the ones who, for what ever the reason, are no longer with us. our momories last forever and can never be taken from us, and thanks to them the ones who are dear to us can never be taken from our lives. thank you for sharing this moment of joy and relief with us!

God is good and has a plan for us all. I too lost my father-in-law, and I struggle with it more now that I did before. I thought it would get easier, but everyday I miss him more. Some times all I can do is pray.

    Prayer is AMAZING!

  31. What a blessing! I received that same book, God's Promises for the Graduate, when I graduated high school and I have turned to it many times to find specific scripture for what I'm going through. You are such a good friend and she is lucky to have your support!

  45. Hi Becky,

I posted earlier, but forgot to say congrats! Before we did the giveaway, I suggested we pick comment #14 in honor of Valentine's Day so I eagerly awaited to see who would leave the 14th comment! It was fun to watch that way!

  48. I really appreciate this post. And I understand it. I understand knowing in your head that Jesus heals and that miracles still happen today, but being so consumed with fear that you can't convince your heart to grasp the truth. Thank you for sharing it. And praise God your friend is okay.

:) You are a good friend to pray for her like that.

  49. Oh Becky ~ what fantastic news. I am so glad that the tests came back and that it was good news. Isn't it ironic that we tend to jump to the worst case scenario first ~ is it a woman thing or just part of human nature? Not sure. Prayer is a powerful thing for sure. xo

  50. This life is so hard...it is impossible to understand and all we can do is trust. I am so grateful for your friend. My parents were recently in a very bad car accident, but survived. They could have been killed by any number of things-the car rolled twice, slid up the highway amidst other cars, there were frozen objects flying around, even their computer! But, they were not taken. This Christmas was so special, having them around. Just a couple of weeks ago, one of my mom's best friends' husband had a heart attack in the middle of the night, and was brain dead by the time they got him to the hospital. They took him off support three days later, he was gone in thirty minutes. I really struggle with this kind of thing. She has suffered so much in her life...why this one more thing? All I can do is trust and hope in the Lord, and wait for the new heavens and the new earth. I am full of all my own issues, insecurities, failures, sadness...whatever. But, there is something that can't let go of God. I don't get it. Maybe it's that He won't let go of me. That is baffling as well. Well, I didn't mean to carry on, but I am so glad to hear about your friend. Praise God!

  51. We Christians know that everything happens for a reason, and that it is all for God's glory - we just don't always understand or we don't see the big picture. You know what made me cry the most about this whole thing? I mean, after the story and the fact that your friend's mass was benign? How many of the commentors above are Christian - how many believe in God Almighty and Jesus Christ. And how many pray to our Heavenly Father. It brings tears to my eyes. So if nothing else, the body of Christ is brought together when things like this happen. And our bond is made stronger. Praise the Lord.............

    Blessings,
    Lisa
